I taught web design for ten years and graphic design for over 20 years. The centerpiece of my teaching was emerging technologies and I put my course materials and learning resources online in the 1990's--long before Blackboard or Web CT made it easy. Examples of these early curricular materials can be found by following the links below, but be forewarned that in keeping with an "open source" philosophy, I include both good and cliched examples of student work as part of my assignments. I found that fewer cliches show up in critique after we've looked at a few of them as part of assigning the design problem.

After enjoying a successful teaching career, I left my tenured position as an Associate Professor to challenge myself and explore new ways of thinking. It was a big step, but I was ready to see where new challenges might take me professionally, personally, and creatively. I began that journey as Creative Director for a student-staffed design, marketing, and web development agency. We produce the marketing and communication materials for Student Involvement and the Nebraska Unions at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. It's an exciting environment working with young creatives who produce compelling and interesting work relevant to our student audience at the University. Check out our work for yourself by following the links below.

Web 2.0 has once again changed the digital landscape and I've enjoyed exploring this new terrain with student programmers. I suspect that if I were teaching again, I would revamp static web materials to take advantage of the community-building and feedback loops that are integral to Web 2.0 spaces. For now, however, I continue to work on small freelance web projects while I explore social media as a user. I've also spent the last couple of years working on some in-depth writing projects.
