Art Web Design Problem: Intuitive Narrative
The Subject Matter:
Each student has been assigned a "real" object as interface. From
this interface, you will create an interactive hypertext in which the pages
are intuitively related to your interface. You may use type and/or image, but
text should not be used to describe the image (like a caption) and image should
not be used to illustrate the text. Text and image should be used as powerful
visual and conceptual elements in and of themselves that support the overall
project concept.
Ideation Process:
Roughs must include a minimum of one digital image
of your object as interface. Your ideas for connected pages can be sketched
or presented in alternative ways but should convey the general sense of
your "intuitive narrative." Work on a minimum of two directions
your "narrative" might take. Roughs should be focused on how
specific elements will be utilized to provide a bigger project concept.
Research:
Find at least two sites that use an inutitive or creative interface for navigation.
You are looking for sites that surprise and please you with unexpected links
or interaction. Send the URLs with a one sentence description to Starla via email.
Technical Considerations:
To successfully complete this problem, your site must have a minimum
of five web pages in addition to your object as interface page.
It must be designed
for a 800 x 600 monitor resolution. Your site must not contain a page
larger than 128k, and pages smaller than 60k are preferred. If
you use a page
larger than 60k, it should not be the first page of your site and the
viewer must be aware of load time as part of the site design.
Images should be
your own or have a significant cultural context that makes referencing
such images supportive of the overall project. Such images must include
an attribution. Text must be spelled and punctuated correctly and use
an appropriate writing style. If you use text by another writer, your
site must attribute the source.
Your site is to be
posted in a separate directory (folder) in your web directory (folder)
called narrative. All file names are to be lowercase, include no spaces
or punctuation, and followed by dot html, gif, jpg, or swf. You will
be
required to
turn in a disk including the following (and only the following):
- Your Dreamweaver
site
- A folder that
houses templates for every image, Flash, and sound file used in your
site
