Attendance Policy

Student Absence: More than three absences in this course will lower the final grade by one letter. College sponsored events, illness or other personal problems do not constitute an excused absence.

Because you are adults and responsible for your own behavior, I will not make judgments that value one excuse for missing class over another.

If you must miss class because of an athletic event, performance, or field trip in another class, you are responsible for the work you missed and it is your responsibility to avoid missing class for other reasons. If your involvement in extra-curricular activities or your requirements for other courses put you at risk of violating this attendance policy, discuss the requirements for this course with your coach, advisor, and/or professor and make a decision about your attendance based on weighing your risks with your responsibilities.

Similarly, if you miss class due to an illness, doctor's appointment, court date, family emergency, personal crisis, or because you took a "mental health day," realize that only three such absences are allowed without penalty. You are responsible for how you manage your time and for any work that you missed.

Because design professionals usually work under tight deadlines, this attendance policy reflects a professional standard of behavior that an iMedia graduate can expect to face in the workplace.

Faculty absence: Although I may miss class on occasion for a professional conference or other professional travel, such absences will be announced in class prior to the event and work will be assigned for the scheduled class session.

If I miss class due to illness or because of severe weather, your course assignment will be posted here on the Daily Assignment page. Because web-based design professionals often complete projects in which most communication takes place online, a lack of my physical presence in the classroom should not prevent us from working together effectively using digital tools. The ability to communicate and work effectively without face to face interaction is a skill worth cultivating.

Should I miss class more than three times over the course of the semester (a highly unlikely scenario), the attendance policy will be extended by the same number of days.
