Art.140 iMedia Design I
Illustrative Word Assignment
In this assignment, you will use letterforms in a manner that
expresses your intent to convey a particular meaning by illustrating a word
of your choice, using any two- or three-dimensional media. The ability of
the viewer to quickly recognize the meaning of the word by easily perceiving
both the letterforms
and the visual strategy you have used to convey meaning is important in successfully
completing this assignment.
If you work two-dimensionally,
you may work on a paper support or an illustration board. If a paper
support
is used, the work should be mounted (flat or with a widow matt, whichever
is most appropriate) in black or white board leaving ample board (3" to
4" depending on finished size) for presentation. If you work directly
on illustration board, take care to leave ample, clean borders.
If you work three-dimensionally, you will
install the work for presentation as appropriate for the concept. If
your work includes a time component, documentation of the performance
is critical to successfully completing the project.
If you work digitally, you will present the work "live" during critique,
but also provide digital documentation of the piece and print-based,
matted documentation of the piece. Roughs
Prepare 50 thumbnail roughs of different solutions to this problem or significant
variations of at least 30 ideas for this project. If you are working with
a three-dimensional concept, draw an image of what you have in mind and
write some descriptive text to the side of the image. Work in color on
one side of large sheets of layout bond; number your images. Although your
drawings should be rough rather than finished, they must communicate your
idea clearly.
Presentational
Rough
Choose your three best ideas. On a large sheet of layout bond or
drawing paper, draw out a "final" version of each of your three best ideas. Pay particular
attention to the shapes of the letterforms. This presentational rough should
clearly convey your final design idea in terms of scale relationships, shape
of letterforms, use of color, etc. If your project is three-dimensional, this
drawing should serve as a "model" with significant notation on the drawing.
Digital
Component
You will also be assessed on
a digital version of your work. To complete this portion of the assignment,
you
will digitally document your work--with a digital camera, by scanning
your work on the Epson large-format scanner, or from digital files you
made when creating your work. Using "save
for web," optimize your image as a
72 dpi jpeg of the image not larger than 32k or 600 pixels in either
direction. Place the image on an html page called illustrative.html.
Link your index.html page to your illustrative.html page and back.
If your piece requires
multiple images (such as details for a three-dimensional piece or time
segments for
a performance piece), create an image and html page for each image.
Link the images beginning with the illustrative.html file. Link your
index.html page to your illustrative.html page and create a link back
to your index.html page from the last image in your series. For a time-based
piece you may also choose to create a digital video and
place a QuickTime
movie
on
a web-page
called
illustrative.html.
If you used digital media to create your piece, you must also create
web pages to document the work as described above and you must create
a print-version documentation/description of your piece. This piece can
be output to photo-quality paper using an inkjet printer and must be
window matted.
